History of SANDS (Qld) Inc
SANDS (Qld) Inc. was established by Judy Clarkson after
she found little or no support to help her understand the
intensity and duration of her grief following the stillbirth
of her daughter.
Shortly after the death of her baby she visited Perth WA and
while there encountered a support group for parents whose babies had died.
Upon her return to Brisbane she set about gaining support to establish a similar
group in Queensland and an inaugural meeting was held in November 1983.
Some notable dates and activities:
- 1984 - 1988 Lobbying for changes to Stillbirth registration
laws
- "From us to you when your baby dies" published
and distributed
- 1985 Constitution accepted by Justice Department
- 1986 Lobbying by all SANDS groups Australia wide regarding wording
of Census
- 1990 "Saying goodbye before you have said hello"
published and distributed
- 1990 - The words "including miscarriage"
added to literature to recognise all losses
- 1992 First successful funding submission allowing the appointment
of a coordinator and administrative assistant
SANDS continues to support, advocate and lobby on behalf of parents.
The motto is "Parents helping Parents".
